Option for the poor has been the pillar of Benedictine apostolate. In that regard, the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing responded to the new signs of the times and implemented various pro-poor programs for social transformation among communities. For several years now, the Sisters have reached out to the less fortunate sectors of the rural population in some parts of the country. These initiatives had already moved lives and spontaneously branched out into varied forms.
This movement further inspires their pro poor charisms and lead them to work with the resource poor farmers, an inspiration which Sister Eloisa David, O.S.B had taken a lead. After S. Eloisa took the SEARSOLIN module on Sustainable Agriculture and Cooperatives last August 2001 at Xavier University in Mindanao she conceived of an alternative mass base development program for farmers, the ST. BENEDICT FARMERS INSTITUTE ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE and a credit cooperative for the Divine Word Hospital employees. These projects will likewise serve as a sustainable support system for hospital employees.
A twelve-person core group composed of S. Eloisa David, S. Julia Yap, S. Waldetrudes Magacat, S. Sarah Gocela, S. Andrea Ecito, Alex Dagsa, Janet Superable, Joy Escalante, Michael Villa, Mildred Pacheco, Romulo Pilapil, during a workshop facilitated by Rey Canunayon, head of the Education & Formation Department of SA Center, Xavier University held last October 3, 2001, spelled out the essentials of the new program. Thus the vision of empowering the resource-poor farming communities in Leyte and Samar through sustainable agriculture was born.
