Program Components

1.  Community Organizing and Development Extension (CODE)
This program component shall focus on the processes that would serve as channels of community participation and growth of the local socio-economic and cultural structures. The program staff shall serve as community facilitators who will apply ethics and people empowerment in their communities.

Among the strategic areas that shall be emphasized are involvement of community members on the process of community-based and asset oriented barangay development (planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation), community consultations and feedback, and institutional program completion.

In the long term, CODE envisions to develop local leaders into skilled community organizers.

2. Community Asset-based Research for Technological Advancement (CARTA)
This program component shall focus on the aspect of community-based research in the fields of sociology, economy, culture, health, and agriculture technology. The two-fold thrusts of CARTA are researches on community resource and asset mapping and validation of indigenous knowledge systems in the communities.

Ultimately, the farmers will be the one to plan and conduct the actual research procedures. They will be the ones to carry out the output of these researches on technological innovations for sustainable farming.

Parallel to this effort is the development of St. Benedict’s Farm in Alang-alang which shall serve as the learning center, seed bank and practicum area for farmer students.

3. Sustainable program Integrated Management System (SIMS)
This program component shall focus on exploring alternative and appropriate management systems suitable to the nature and pace of the program.

Staff development shall be designed as culturally sensitive and directed towards the full growth of human potential. This is to make SIMS staff effective and efficient in their work.

A framework for program management shall be innovated and later established as a prototype for similar programs.

4. Bulig Volunteer Program  (BULIG)
Conceptualized and implemented last November 2003, the BULIG Volunteer Program is the latest program component of SBFISA.

The BULIG Volunteer Program invites young professionals to work for sustainable development projects with local partners. Young people who may consider social development as a career option can advance work in the Leyte and Samar areas. They will be taught appropriate skills, value orientation and spirituality in preparation for a career in social development.

The ultimate goal of the BULIG Volunteer Program is to produce competent men and women who can work on sustainable development and agriculture projects in partnership with social development organizations (SDOs), people’s organization (POs), church-based institutions and local government units (LGUs) in the Leyte and Samar areas.
